Remebering DR. Jack Greenberg

Dr. Jack Greenberg passed away March 11, 2024. He devoted his career to the field of neuroimaging and was the our third President of American Society of Neuroimaging.  He was born in Washington, PA and graduated from Washington & Jefferson College with a BA in 1955. He then received his MD from the University of Pittsburgh in 1959. He trained in UCLA, Boston and Leeds, England and finally at the University of Pennsylvania. He served as Captain in the US Army at Camp Zama, Japan in 1965 and 1966. He practiced Neurology at Episcopal Hospital from 1967 to 1993. Jack served as Professor of Neurology at Temple University then at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. He authored over 50 papers and scientific journals, and was editor of a textbook of neuroimaging in its second edition. He served on boards of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Society of Neuroimaging where he was our third President.

Dr. Greenberg also served on board of the American Academy of Neurology(AAN) and was on the thirteen member AAN Ad Hoc Committee on Imaging in 1975 that produced the resolution: “Neuroimaging is an integral part of the practice of neurology, that requires broad knowledge of neuroanatomy, neuropathology, pathophysiology, and clinical neurology. Proper interpretation of neuroimaging requires knowledge of the effects of disease on the neuroimaging examination, its indications, performance and interpretation.” In 1998, Dr. Greenberg penned the history of neurology and neuroimaging for the 50th Anniversary of the American Academy of Neurology, “1895-1973: The beginning of modern neuroimaging.” You can learn more about Dr. Greenberg and “The History of Neuroimaging” on our website.

According to friend and former ASN President, Dr John Chawluk, “I have been in touch with his son, Jeff, and last spoke with Jack a couple of months ago. He celebrated his 90th birthday last August. Another ASN founding father leaves us. He will be missed by many.”

ASN will be honoring Dr. Greenberg and our founding fathers at the January 2025 Annual Meeting in Dallas.

Dr. Laszlo Mechtler reminds us that, “Jack was an inspiration to all of us. He was one of those giants of neuroimaging and ASN that inspired countless other imagers. May he Rest in Peace. He will be missed but never forgotten.”
