Dr. Andrei V. Alexandrov is a distinguished clinician, researcher, and leader in cerebrovascular medicine, widely recognized for his contributions to acute stroke care, neurovascular ultrasound, and the development of innovative reperfusion strategies. As Chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, he guides programs that advance neurologic care, expand neuroimaging capabilities, and strengthen stroke systems across the region.
Dr. Alexandrov’s career has been defined by his pioneering work in novel reperfusion therapies and the use of real‑time imaging to guide emergent stroke treatment. Prior to joining the University of Arizona, he served as Chair of Neurology and Semmes‑Murphey Professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, where he led transformative initiatives in stroke care delivery. As Medical Director of the University of Tennessee Mobile Stroke Unit, he oversaw the development of the world’s first mobile platform equipped with a state‑of‑the‑art CT scanner capable of performing head and neck CT angiography in the field. Under his leadership, the Memphis city‑wide Stroke Program achieved and sustained the nation’s highest alteplase (tPA) treatment rates from 2015 to 2021.
A respected voice in national and international neurologic communities, Dr. Alexandrov has held numerous leadership roles. He is an elected member of the American Neurological Association and has served as Director of the Neurosonology Examination (1998–2018), President of the American Society of Neuroimaging (2019–2021), and a Board Member of the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (2013–2020). He was the founding Editor‑in‑Chief of Brain and Behavior and has served on the editorial boards of Stroke, Cerebrovascular Diseases, the International Journal of Stroke, and the Journal of Neuroimaging. His service also includes leadership roles within the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology and the American Heart Association’s International Stroke Conference Program Committee.
Dr. Alexandrov’s achievements have earned him recognition as one of the nation’s leading neurologists. U.S. News & World Report named him among America’s Top Doctors in Neurology (2011–2014); Castle Connolly ranked him in the top 1% of neurology specialists (2011–2017); and Expertscape designated him a world expert in stroke (2019) and ultrasonic therapy (2021).
A prolific scholar, Dr. Alexandrov holds a U.S. patent, has authored more than 315 original scientific papers, and has trained 57 fellows in stroke and cerebrovascular ultrasound. His foundational training in neurology, cerebrovascular ultrasound, and stroke took place in Moscow, Toronto, and Houston, shaping a career that continues to influence global standards in stroke diagnosis and treatment.
